THE FOOD PYRAMID
SERIOUS MISTAKES IN THE FOOD PYRAMID SINCE 1991
In recommending choices for a healthy diet, there are those who, even today, refer to the most famous of the food pyramids, the one developed in 1991 by the United States Department of Agriculture, which envisages the daily consumption of abundant portions of rice, pasta, potatoes and other refined and concentrated carbohydrate-based foodstuffs.

As Barry Sears says, in reality, from the bodily response viewpoint, the consequences of the consumption of such foods are very similar to what would happen if one were to eat, a cup of normal cooking sugar within the space of a few minutes; no dietician would ever recommend that you eat such a quantity of sugar at any one time, yet some still insist on recommending large helpings of rice, pasta and potatoes!

As many researchers have now shown, this is the biggest error in the 1991 food pyramid, the one that was created in order to help Americans (and those living in other industrialised countries) combat obesity and a number of other disorders and diseases, and failed completely in its objective.

There is another error in that food pyramid in relation to fats:  it maintains that all are bad for you, while, in fact, some of them are very useful for our bodies.  Extra virgin olive oil, for example, is an enormous gift from nature.  The omega-3 family of fatty acids is fundamental for our wellbeing. The fats originating from oily fruits, such as almonds, pine nuts, walnuts and hazelnuts, are also good for you.  In short, from now on, you should no longer refer to the 1991 food pyramid, but to the new EnerZona pyramid.
